Here's How Books Can Have An Awesome Effect On Your Mental Health 📚
If you’re stressed what’s the first thing you reach for? Maybe some Netflix? Cup of tea? Maybe a cheeky wine (oops 💁). Well, it’s time to grab a book and take in some words, and here’s why.
A study from the University of Sussex, says that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. That’s a whole load. The study showed that silently reading for just six minutes slows down the heart rate and eases tensions in muscles. In fact, it got subjects to stress levels lower than before they started.
Dr Lewis, the cognitive neuropsychologist behind the study, said: "Losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation… we are all craving a certain amount of escapism.”
Not only are books excellent ways of exercising the brain, they’re obviously great for your mental health, improving your stress levels and calming your mood. Reading a book proved more successful in lowering stress levels than listening to music, having a cup of tea or taking a relaxing walk.
So, what better reason than to cancel those plans we know you wanted to cancel, snuggle up in bed tonight and get lost in a page turner.
