What do you listen to on your commute?
I listen to a podcast called “No Such Thing As A Fish” by the QI elves on my walk to the station. It’s really funny, highly recommend. Then when I’m on the train I switch to reading Lord Of The Rings on my kindle.
What does the average day look like for you?
Well, this isn’t every morning, but I did get a free McDonald’s coffee this morning which was a great start. Get in, sit down, log in, check that there have been no disasters on social. Basically make sure everything is in check. Look at what I have scheduled for the day. I usually have loads of meetings throughout the day to catch up with various members of the marketing team. I assess the analytics and engagements from all the recent posts; social media is ever-changing, so you need to be on top of the latest trends. I check out what’s popular, what’s engaging, and how can we react to it. I know what messages I have to get out so I have to think about how I can do that in the most engaging way - one way I do this is creating animations using Photoshop and After Effects for our insta stories.
What’s your favourite thing about your job?
Everything is always different and trends change a lot, so you’ve always got to stay on top of what’s going on. You don’t make the same content every day and I’m always testing new things to see what works and what doesn’t work. Basically, I really enjoy the problem solving combined with creativity!
If money was no object, what job would you do?
Recently I've been really into plants, so I'm thinking gardener, but maybe only in summer. Yeah, so maybe not that at all haha. I just got a skateboard too, so maybe a skateboarder, but in all honesty video is what I’m interested in so I think it would have something where I could be creative and make videos.
What was your favourite thing about uni?
We used to spend a lot of time in newsrooms which was so much fun. We’d go out and find stories, film them and edit the footage ourselves. Also we did just hang out in the newsrooms and mess around which was always a lot more fun.
How’d your degree help you in your current role?
It definitely helped me decide what I didn’t want to do haha. Obviously, the video and digital side of my degree helps me a lot in my current role, but also university itself helped me gain confidence in a lot of different areas and skills. I did a journalism degree but it definitely gave me a lot more skills than just that one area.
How did you get into social media?
I went for a job at the University of East London - the job was communications assistant ( video/ social media). I went there to focus on the video side of things, but as I started doing more social media I realised that I really enjoyed it so decided to focus on this.
Where did you work before this?
I worked at the UEL and before that I was working at Millie’s Cookies and I got so fat I had to quit. The problem was you couldn’t sell broken cookies so… I’d break ‘em. (Please don’t sue me, Millie).
What do you do to wind down after a long day?
When I get off work I head straight to the gym, it helps me relax and after sitting at a desk all day it is good to have some balance. I live with 3 friends so after I'm done I go home chill, chat and play Mario Kart.
What’s your advice to anyone wanting to be a Social Media Manager?
You have to know what people like and what people don’t like. It’s easy to do this, but you have to figure out how to fit your goals into that. How can you take trends and things people are talking about and use it to help you achieve your own goals.
