Stupidly Easy Ways To Save Money At Uni That Actually Work 🤑
Student life is hard. Saving money is hard. Check out our stupidly easy tips and tricks to save money while at university.
Seriously, stop. 😂
Here are some of our favourite ways to save money that basically require minimum effort (which is also our favourite amount of effort.) 💁♀️
GO FOOD SHOPPING AT NIGHT
Well, not at night, but in the evening. After 6pm, most supermarkets start to reduce their food which means it’s time to go hunting for yellow sticker items. Best before dates don’t mean the food won’t be good after this date - it literally means it’s BEST before, obviously use your brain, don’t go eating gone off chicken… but in general with fruits/ veg/ bread it’ll last a little longer than you expect.
TRY THE 1P CHALLENGE
You might’ve heard of this one before, but you wouldn’t believe how much you can save with this challenge. If you put away 1p and then an extra 1p per day for a whole year, you can save a whopping £667.95 in one year! Not bad, ey? It’s easy to get started so you might as well see if you can. On day one you put away 1p, day two = 2p, day three = 3p and so on and so forth.
If you’re worried about not being able to access your money when you need it simply whack it in a Monzo pot or a savings account that you don’t have a waiting time on withdrawals.
CHECK THE PRICE PER UNIT
Often things will be a heckin’ lot cheaper if you buy in bulk. Check the smaller number on the price tag (price per unit) and compare it. Even if something is on offer it’s not always the best price when you take into consideration the weight of the product.
SAY YES TO LOYALTY CARDS
Whether it’s a Nectar Card, a Boots Advantage Card or just a stamping ticket from your favourite local coffee shop, it’s always worth keeping a hold of points. Once you save up enough points you can treat yourself with zero guilt.
CASH MONEY ONLY
When you’re on a night out, don’t take your card. When we’ve had a few too many beers we tend to get a little bit too generous with our money and nobody likes waking up the next day with a banging hangover and a healthy chunk of their overdraft gone on 10 tequila shots for you and that random girl/ guy you met in the bathroom who legit loved your outfit.
Having cash makes sure that drunk you spends within the budget sober you set.
USE THE LIBRARY
Sure, owning copies of books is lovely, but your uni room is probably not set up to be full of your favourite novels. Use the library and read for free! Not only is it a good way to get out your room, it can be super relaxing and de-stressing. Check out our article on why reading is so good for your mental health.
GO OWN BRAND
Ever wondered why a pack of supermarket paracetamol is wayyyy cheaper than some fancy pants brand with a cool looking logo? Well, that’s the answer. The logo. You’re paying more to have a box with a name on it - usually these products are exactly the same, so don’t be tricked by marketing schemes that want you to pay way more for the same thing.
MEAT FREE MONDAY
By switching out one day a week you can save a few pennies in your weekly shop. Vegetarian meals are often loads cheaper than any meat based product, so switch it up a bit and enjoy some tasty veggie alternatives. Plus, sweet potato is the best don’t even try to deny it.
USE STUDENT DISCOUNTS
I mean, duh. We don’t wanna toot our own trumpet too much, but seriously if they’re there you should be using them! Download the Student Beans app or head to our website and you can save some serious moolah. Easy.
