A Day In The Life Of... A Social Media Assistant At boohoo

Name: Lauren Potts
Company: boohoo.com
Job Title: Social Media Assistant
Uni subject: Fashion Promotion

Wake up…

Breakfast =

This is terrible, but my diet isn’t the best! I usually have a bagel or beans on toast... This needs improving! Haha. Ideally I’d love to be the person who eats natural yoghurt and fruit!

What do you listen to on your commute?

I drive into work, so I usually listen to Capital FM, the presenters are so chatty so it usually wakes me up and gets me in a good mood to start my day!

What does the average day look like for you?

Currently I’m looking after the boohoo Twitter, I’ll spend my morning sourcing content and checking up on what competitors are doing. I’ll also spend time looking at Twitter moments, if anything happened overnight that relates to the brand, it needs tweeting about. For example the Grammys, film premieres, celebrity birthdays, Love Island gossip etc. We tend to keep our content quite humorous on Twitter so I spend most of my afternoons creating memes – Not a bad job, ey?!

In a few weeks’ time I’ll be taking over the Instagram, this will involve me sourcing content for the grid and deciding what gets posted each day – The Instagram has 6.1 million followers, so no pressure! But I’m ready for the challenge. It’s exciting.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about the job is the social side. I live and breathe social media, so for me it’s the perfect job. I love meeting new people at social events, you get given so many new opportunities inside and outside of work and for me it’s the dream. I assisted on an influencer trip last week in Amsterdam, I covered the whole event on socials, it didn’t even feel like work to me!

If money was no object what would you be?

I think I’d still work in social media, I spend most my days on Instagram so why not?!

What was your favourite thing about uni?

I actually found myself during university, I didn’t really know what I wanted to be or do before I started. I came out of my shell massively and it’s made me the person I am today. If it wasn’t for my lecturers at university I would’ve never gained the confidence to apply for a placement with boohoo. From my placement I then secured a job here full time as a graduate. My advice to anyone would be to step out your comfort zone and do a placement, I’ve never looked back.

How’d your degree help you in your current role?

I did Fashion Promotion which is basically marketing within fashion brands. We focussed a lot on social media, marketing campaigns, brand identity etc. Like I said before it secured me a placement at boohoo where I now work full time. If it wasn’t for my degree I wouldn’t be here now doing what I love.

Where did you work before this?

I worked part time at John Lewis for three years whilst at university.

What do you do to wind down after a long day?

I’m a huge film junkie. Most nights I get in from work, stick my PJs on and find a new film to watch. If anyone asks me to do anything in the week I’m always unavailable haha. I think it’s so important to relax and wind down after a day at work, I do all my socialising at the weekend!

What’s your advice to anyone wanting to be a Social Media Assistant?

I’ll advise anyone to do a placement during their time at university. They love experience here and if you want to get into social media within fashion brands it’s so competitive! Get the experience and you’ll stand out from the rest.
